Staff stories – Laconia

Seven years at Shaftesbury Bradbury Court and the job still keeps Laconia on her toes!

“The minute I get complacent, it’s time to go. But there’s no chance of that - I’m actively encouraged by management to keep learning. I’ve gained so much from this experience and there are plenty of opportunities for more training to further my career,” she says.

Originally hired as agency staff, Laconia is now employed as an Enabling Support Worker and Team Leader, providing one-to-one care for adults with physical disabilities who reside at Shaftesbury Bradbury Court in Harrow.

“Everyone here is treated with respect and we work as a team. Even as agency staff, I felt valued, which encouraged me to become permanent. There is not much staff turnover, which tells you a lot,” says Laconia.

The best thing about working for Shaftesbury? “The people we support are happy because they have choices about how they spend their day. At the end of my shift, they say things like, ‘Thank you for today’. Getting that acknowledgement is priceless.”
