What makes life meaningful for Lee James

It took just one trip to see a wrestling match 30 years ago, and that was it, he was hooked!

Lee James, or LJ as we know him, has been a massive wrestling fan ever since. It’s a true passion that makes him really happy.

His enthusiasm is so infectious, other members of the community at Shaftesbury John Grooms Court in Norwich are becoming interested in wrestling too.

Although there aren’t many opportunities to watch live matches locally, LJ still remembers the excitement of the first time he saw the action first-hand in a London arena.

Ever since, he has been avidly following his favourite wrestlers, watching matches on-screen and collecting memorabilia, including action figures and a replica wrestling belt.

What he loves is the drama, the dressing up, the music and the storytelling behind each of the wrestling personas. He can tell you all about Sheamus, Big Show, Kane and Crush. If these names are not familiar to you, you’re missing out, according to LJ!

At Shaftesbury, we use LifeSums to ensure care is tailored to the unique needs and interests of the people we support. There’s no doubt about what comes top of LJ’s LifeSum list, but he’s also interested in guitars, music (especially the music they play when wrestlers enter the ring) and expressing his creativity by making things.

He’s proud of a clock he made for his dad recently and his art is displayed for all to admire in the office at Shaftesbury John Grooms Court.

What LJ likes most about living here is the close proximity to the centre of Norwich. He’s a man who likes to get out and about so is supported to go on lots of shopping trips, especially when there’s wrestling merchandise he wants to buy. He also attends a day centre three days a week, run by local charity Nansa [Norfolk and Norwich Send Association].

Engaging in hobbies is actively encouraged by Activities Co-ordinator, Rob Welton. He’s a big believer in taking the time to understand people’s interests and passions in order to promote confidence and emotional wellness among the 24 adults living in self-contained flats at Shaftesbury John Grooms Court.

Rob tries to include something for everyone in his weekly programme of social activities as this avoids people spending too much time alone and helps strengthen the bond between residents.

LJ and Rob both play the guitar which gives them something in common. Their time together means Rob has inadvertently become knowledgeable about the world of wrestling too!

Another resident Peter has also been inspired by LJ to take an interest in the sport, as has Deputy Manager, Aga. LJ recently gifted her a mug with his favourite wrestling characters printed on it.

As LJ turns 50 next year, he has big ambitions to celebrate by getting tickets for a wrestling tour. Meanwhile, he is trying to source wrestling-themed bed linen and curtains to add the finishing touches to his bedroom.
