As a new independent specialist college, Shaftesbury Millie College had a monitoring inspection in April. Inspectors assessed progress across four key areas: leadership and governance, inclusion, curriculum and teaching, and safeguarding.
The inspection report highlighted several key strengths, including the college’s clear vision, inclusive approach and personalised learning programmes that support each young person’s development, independence and communication skills.
A unique learning environment
Central to the college’s approach to learning is its enterprise curriculum which aligns with its countryside location.
Set within a 350-acre site of special scientific interest near Poole, the college offers a calm and inspiring learning environment.
Students develop practical skills working in the college’s gardens and open spaces, as well as the on-site café and Millie’s Gifts & Garden shop, based at the Courtyard Craft Centre, Lytchett Minster.
Inspectors noted how tutors skilfully link English, mathematics and personal development into enterprise activities, with work-related learning supporting increased confidence and independence as students develop key skills.
Specialist support and therapeutic interventions are seamlessly integrated into the curriculum, enabling students to make the most of the opportunities available.
The report stated that safeguarding is embedded across the college, with students feeling safe, supported and able to thrive.
Building foundations for the future
College Principal Jon Ascot said: ‘This inspection marks an important milestone in our journey since opening in September 2022.
‘We are pleased the inspectors recognised the impact of our progress so far. The report reflects the dedication of our staff in creating a supportive, inclusive environment and adapting teaching to meet the needs of all students.
‘We will continue to build on these strong foundations to deliver the best possible outcomes for our students.’
Shaftesbury Director for Education Adele Audin said: ‘This achievement reflects the efforts of everyone involved in the college community. The inspection report highlights how we prepare our young people for adulthood, through increased confidence and independence.’
