Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal hosted national disability charity Shaftesbury at St. James’s Palace, London last night.
The dinner marked a historical milestone in the charity’s history. In 1844, the Shaftesbury Charity rose from the Ragged School Union, when the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury was its President. Today, Nick Ashley-Cooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, continues the tradition in his role as Shaftesbury Vice-Patron.
In this landmark year, the charity is capitalising on its heritage, with a clear focus on raising awareness and growing support. The organisation serves children and young people through its special education settings and cares for adults in its residential and supported living services.
As Patron, The Princess Royal met with guests to celebrate the anniversary. Guests in attendance included loyal supporters, Vice-Presidents, the Vice-Patron and members of a new Shaftesbury Ambassador Programme.
Shaftesbury CEO Sally Chivers said:
“This is quite a moment for our fabulous organisation. I send my heartfelt thanks to our remarkable Patron who has given resolute support for 22 years (and counting). I also thank our loyal donors who play a crucial part in sustaining our charitable service. With their continued help, and with the assistance of our new ambassadors, we will be here for another 180 years. The unmet need for those with disabilities never ceases”.
