A Christmas wish come true

Matthew’s Christmas wish this year is to spend time with his precious children. As a sociable, hard-working, family man, it’s something he used to be able to take for granted.

Life changed in an instant when Matthew fell off his push bike, hit his head on the curb and suffered a catastrophic brain injury. He’s now non-verbal and non-mobile which means quality time with his three daughters is more important than ever.

We’re sharing Matthew’s story in our Opening Doors campaign as a stark reminder of how disability can affect any one of us. It highlights how some people supported by Shaftesbury are facing unimaginable challenges this Christmas.

The residential service where Matthew lived previously was too far away. Now he’s at Shaftesbury Ashley Place in Bognor Regis, the girls visit him frequently and get to spend time with him on Christmas day. Last year, they all wore matching outfits and staff supported Matthew to buy their gifts.

We believe wholeheartedly in making Christmas inclusive for people with disabilities. Staff teams across our residential, educational and rehabilitation services will be going the extra mile to ensure people we support can take part in seasonal activities and enjoy time with loved ones.

“Our doors are always open, and every day we work alongside the people we support to open even more. This Christmas, through our Opening Doors campaign, we are encouraging everyone to think differently – to recognise the barriers that exist and to support us to tackle them so everyone can take part, be included, feel valued and flourish,” says our Chief Executive, Sally Chivers.
